Magstripe cards are very similar to your ATM cards that have a magnetic stripe on the edge of the card and when swiped or inserted through a magstripe reader the data was transmitted to the processor. These cards are easily damaged by electromagnetic fields and heat. Although still used today, the tecxhnology is being replaced by the RFID or Proximity.
