Exit Button Exit Buttons are required by code, for possible malfunction of motion exit sensor. The exit button is mounted next to door and momentarily pressing the button releases the door for the set amount of time required by code. There are many different styles but they all have the same function. The buttons are douoble pole, meaning they have 2 sets of contacts. One set is used to directly break lock power and the second is used to send a signal to the access control system in orded to shunt varius alarms while entering the door. In most cases the button os mountd in a metal enclosure mounted on the door frame. There is a maximum distance the button can be mounted from the door. |

Electric Locks
There are several types of electric locks (Electric Strikes, Electric Deadbolts, Stairwell Locks, Electric Mortise Locks, Electromagnetic Locks, etc.) In most instances ECI will install an electromagnetic lock for various reasons. They require almost no maintenance and are very reliable and secure. There are several manufacturers of electromag locks and several different models to choose from. The model and style would depend on the application. |
Electro Magnetic Locks An electromagnetic lock, magnetic lock, or maglock is a locking device that consists of an electromagnet and an armature plate. By attaching the electromagnet to the door frame and the armature plate to the door, a current passing through the electromagnet attracts the armature plate, holding the door shut. Unlike an electric strike a magnetic lock requires power to remain locked and is therefore not suitable for high security applications, because it is possible to bypass the lock by disrupting the power supply. However, electromagnetic locks are better for emergency exit doors, because they are less likely to fail to unlock. Nevertheless, the strength of today's magnetic locks compares well with that of conventional door locks and they cost less than conventional light bulbs to operate. Power supplies incorporating a trickle-charged lead-acid battery pack can be used to retain security for short-term power outages. The first modern direct-pull electromagnetic lock was designed by S. I. Saphirstein in 1969 for initial installation on doors at the Montreal Forum. Fire concerns by local authorities in locking the doors at the Forum prompted management to find a locking solution that would be safe during a fire incident. Saphirstein initially proposed to use a linear stack of door holders to work as an electromagnetic lock. These door holders were traditionally used to hold doors open, but in this application Saphirstein believed that they could be packaged and adapted to work as a fail-safe lock. After a successful prototype and installation at the Forum, Saphirstein continued evolving and improving the design and established the Locknetics company to develop accessories and control circuits for electromagnetic locks. Under difficult business conditions, Locknetics was later sold to the Ives Door Hardware company and later, resold to the Harrow company. Much later this division was then again sold to Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies. The division was recently closed and transferred to other divisions within Ingersoll Rand Security. Employees that were associated with activities at Locknetics, went on to form other electromagnetic lock companies, including Dynalock Corporation and Security Engineering Co. Saphirstein continued developing electromagnetic locking technologies at other companies he initiated including Dortronics (later purchased by Sag Harbor Industries), Delta Controls (first purchased by the Lori Lock Company and then later purchased by Hanchett Entry Systems) and Delt-Rex Door Controls, all of which were located in Connecticut. Other engineers also left these companies to form their own manufacturing firms in electronic locking, including Highpower Security Products LLC in Meriden, Connecticut. Many other firms in both the U.S., Canada, and throughout Asia were later established to create additional product offerings for the direct-pull electromagnetic lock. The principle behind a electromagnetic lock is the use of electromagnetism to lock a door when energized. The holding force should be collinear with the load, and the lock and armature plate should be face-to-face to achieve optimal operation. The magnetic lock relies upon some of the basic concepts of electromagnetism. Essentially it consists of an electromagnet attracting a conductor with a force large enough to prevent the door from being opened. In a more detailed examination, the device makes use of the fact that a current through one or more loops of wire (known as a solenoid) produces a magnetic field. This works in free space, but if the solenoid is wrapped around a ferromagnetic core such as soft iron the effect of the field is greatly amplified. This is because the internal magnetic domains of the material align with each other to greatly enhance the magnetic flux density. Although the actual performance of a magnetic lock may differ substantially due to various losses (such as flux leakage between the electromagnet and the conductor), the equations give a good insight into what is necessary to produce a strong magnetic lock. For example, the force of the lock is proportional to the square of the relative permeability of the magnetic core. Given the relative permeability of a material can vary from around 250 for cobalt to around 5000 for soft iron and 7000 for silicon-iron, the choice of magnetic core can therefore have an important impact upon the strength of a magnetic lock. Also relevant is the choice of current, number of loops and effective length of the electromagnet. Magnetic locks possess a number of advantages over conventional locks and electric strikes. For example, their durability and quick operation can make them valuable in a high-traffic office environment where electronic authentication is necessary. |

Magstripe Cards Magstripe cards are very similar to your ATM cards that have a magnetic stripe on the edge of the card and when swiped or inserted through a magstripe reader the data was transmitted to the processor. These cards are easily damaged by electromagnetic fields and heat. Although still used today, the tecxhnology is being replaced by the RFID or Proximity. Contact our Sales Team for more details concerning security cards. |
Magstripe Reader
Magstripe readers are of the technology very much like the readers at your local ATM. A magnetic stripe is on the card and is programmed with the necessary information and then when read the information is transmitted to the processor where access will be granted as long as the card is valid for that particular entry. The technology is still used today in the security industry but is slowly being phased out by newer and more reliable technologies. Being as magnetic stripes are very prone to damage from magnetic fields and easily copied, other more secure technologies are preferred. |

Stairwell Door Locks Mortise Electric Locks are drop in replacements for the door mounted mechanical locks. However, a hole must be drilled through the door for electric power wires. Also a power transfer hinge is used to get the power from the door frame to the door. Electric mortise and cylindrical locks allow mechanical free egress. Electric mortise and cylindrical locks can be either fail unlocked or fail locked. In the US, UL rated doors must retain their rating. In new construction doors are cored and then rated. In retofits, the doors must be re-rated after they have ben cored. While the many applications include interior failsecure installations, failsecure electrified mortise locksets and electrified exit devices are the ONLY locking devices that comply with exit door, lobby door and stairwell door security needs and fire life safety code requirements. Electric strikes are not compliant as they cannot keep the door latched when unlocked, failing to maintain fire door integrity. Electromagnetic locks lock the interior egress side of the door violating fire and building code requirement that the door must be unlocked on the interior at all times. |

Optical Reader
Optical readers are very similar to the same technology as with barcode labels you see on the foods you buy. The readers are very reliable and requiring little maintenance. Barcode readers are swipe readers requiring the user to swipe the card through the reader. |
Peripheral Devices
The Card Reader Processors are only the brains of the system. The work horses are the peripheral devices such as Locks, Exiting Devices and Readers. Every part of the system, right down to the Power Supplies, Relays and even the type of Hardware used to install the devices are of vital importance. Failure with your access control system, in most instances, will inconvenience your tenants in some way and you don't need that. ECI designs every system to suit the needs of the application. You can rest assured that Quality will be our greatest concern. |
Motion Detectors Motion detectors are required by code to acheive hands free exit. The motion detector sends a signal to the access control system to unlock the door for a pre-set period of time. Motion detectors are many times mounted on the door frame directly above the door. Motion detectors are FM rated and only rated motion detectors can be used as egress devices. |
Products and Services
At ECI we are in the business of Access Control and Database Management of Multi Tenant Office Buildings throughout Houston and surrounding counties. (Contact our sales department to determine if you are within our service area) Our services and products include but not limited to: |
Proximity Card ReadersProximity card readers are strongly desired in the office building market, not just in the Houston area, but around the nation and is the preferred method of controlling office building access. Proximity Cards Proximity cards are the latest and greatest in security card technoligy. They are very reliable and cost effective making them the preferred technology today. Like most other security cards there are several types to chose from. Contact our Saless Team for more details concerning security cards. |
Proximity Reader
Proximity readers are becoming the preferred reader in that the user simply places the card within the proximity of the card reader. Distances vary from one model to another from a few inches to 30 feet or more. There are several manufacturers and models depending on your specific application. This particular card technology does NOT require swiping or inserting the card. Simply present the card within the proximity range of the reader. |

Security Card Readers
Security Card readers are quite common today for gaining access to office space after hours, not just in the Houston area, but around the nation. Card readers come in several different technologies but the preferred technology is proximity where the card is presented to the card reader in a close proximity rather than swiping or inserting. A much older technology but still used today is barcode where the reader reads a barcode very similar to the barcode used in grocery stores. Other tecnologies like wiegand or magstripe where it was required to swipe the card through the reader, have given way to the proximity technology. |

Stairwell Door Locks Stairwell Door Locks are under very strict requirements when it comes to locking stairwells. They must unlock the door but not unlatch tghe door. This requires special locks. Electric mortise and cylindrical locks are drop in replacements for the door mounted mechanical locks. |
Electric Strike An electric strike is an access control device used for access controlled doors. It replaces the fixed strike faceplate often used with a latchbar (also known as a keeper). Like a fixed strike, it normally presents a ramped surface to the locking latch allowing the door to close and latch just like a fixed strike would. However, an electric strike's ramped surface can, upon command, pivot out of the way of the latch allowing the door to be pushed open (from the outside) without the latch being retracted (that is, without any operation of the knob) or while excited the knob or lever can be turned to allow egress from the secured area. Electric strikes generally are available in two configurations: Fail-secure. Also called fail-locked or non-fail safe. In this configuration, applying electric current to the strike will cause it to open. In this configuration, the strike would remain locked in a power failure, but typically the knob can still be used to open the door from the inside for egress from the secure side. These units can be powered by alternating current, which will cause the unit to buzz, or DC power, which offers silent operation, except for a "click" while the unit releases. Fail-safe. Also called fail-open. In this configuration, applying electric current to the strike will cause it to lock. It operates the same as a magnetic lock would. If there is a power failure, the door opens merely by being pushed or pulled. Fail-safe units are always operated with direct current. Electric strikes are sometimes equipped with buzzers that allow someone outside the door to hear when the door is open. The buzzing noise is typically simply a result of applying AC current to the strike instead of DC. There are many manufacturers of strikes, and there are many things that have to be considered when buying one, i.e., type of jamb, type of locking hardware, whether one requires fail-secure or fail-safe, length of latch, depth of jamb, voltage requirements and the length of the faceplate. In some cases it is better to choose a magnetic lock. |

Visitor Access ControlWhen considering Access Control, you must include provisions for allowing visitors access after normal business hours. Depending a the tenant to have someone wait at the door to allow visitors entry and maintain security in most cases will not happen. Many tiomes the door will simply be propped open allowing anyone entry into the building. Therefore the means of visitors gaining access after hours can be accomplished through the use of a Visitor Entry System. There are many manufacturers depending on your application. (Contact our Sales Team for more details) They all use a very simple technique. The visitor pushes a 3 or 4 digit code and the system in turn dials the a programmed phone number for the tenant. The tenant merely answers the phone and visitor identifies themself then the tenant presses a number on the phone momentarily unlocking the door for the visitor to enter. The door closes behind them and remains in secure mode. |
Wiegand Cards Wiegand cards were the preferred technology until proximity was introduced to the market. The wiegand card was a very strange technology in that wire was twisted in a fashion that when passed through a wiegand reader would transmit the data to the processor. These wires were sometimes damaged from having them in your wallet to laying them on your dash in the sun. Although still used today, the tecxhnology is being replaced by the RFID or Proximity. Contact our Sales Team for more details concerning security cards. |
Wiegand Reader
Wiegand technology is widely used in several formats. The wiegand card readers are highly reliable and require no maintenance other than brushing the dirt from the reader slot. Of course the reader works just as well mounted upside down preventing the dirt to collect in the reader slot. Although a very reliable technology there are a few down sides. The cards for this technology are more costly and require a long lead time in most instances. This technology requires that the card be swiped through or inserted into the card reader. |
